Cyber Security is the body of technologies, processes and practices designed to protect networks, computers, programs and data from attack, damage or unauthorized access. The world has become a global village through the Internet (cyber space). The use of the Internet is also commonplace in all types of organizations, in academia, research, industry, government, private and business organizations. As such the potential for cyber security-related careers will continue to grow and the career paths in cyber security-related fields will become more diverse.

The career opportunities for cyber security science graduates includes: internet security, software security, information security, networks security, cyber security research, to mention few. Some careers require additional formal training or study, and experience working in the field.

HISTORY

The Department of Cyber Security Science was established in 2009. It was created from the defunct Department of Mathematics/Computer Science with the aim that it is the backbone of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The Department offers a degree programme of Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Computer Science (Cyber Security). The Department of Cyber Security Science is one of the departments in the School of Information and Communication Technology (SICT). The Department offers a unique educational opportunity for students to achieve excellence through vigorous classes, practical and participation in cutting edge ICT research.

PHILOSOPHY

The Department of Cyber Security Science will build capacity and develop human capital to the highest level possible in the field of cyber security science to safeguard the information super-highway (the Internet), create job and wealth, and reduce unemployment and poverty.

VISION

To constitute an unequal and attainable Centre of Excellence for the development of Cyber Security Tools in both hardware and software in Nigeria and world at large. The Department envisions high manpower development in cybercrime detections at both local and at the International scenes.

MISSION

To develop standards with intense and sound academic competency in ICT infrastructures utilities that shall meet manpower demands that has impeccable revolutionized ethical minds which would meet businesses, cooperate bodies and governmental institutions demands without tented aggrandizements both at the Local and International Scenes.

GOALS/AIMS

The goal of this Department is to provide relevant basic educational structure that will equip the graduates of the Department with profound and useful skills that would enable them function in this age of Information and Communication Technology; also to produce sound graduates that will help in the development and maintaining the Nigeria Cyberspace against local and International aggressions, this is achievable through providing meaningful learning contents towards this goal realization.

OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT

Cyber Security Science Department aims at the following objectives:

  • To develop Graduates on basic Information Security Skills that would curb frauds;
  • To develop Malware detective codes and supportive software agents that would reduce critical security threats for the Internet and Web community;
  • To develop and enhance on Malware and Digital Forensic Science that would render the detections of cybercrimes on the web and on Internet devices;
  • To develop graduates on Cryptology and web Security for businesses and commercial enterprises for cloud computing so that businesses secrecy and security are achieved;
  • To develop manpower that would defend the Nigerian Cyberspace and at the International scenes through mutual collaborations;
  • To develop the students for the purpose of self-employment
  • To promote the career opportunities offered by Cyber Security Science and to meet with the ongoing needs of the industry.

A good number of academic staff has delivered public lecturers to the community on various areas of interest.
