The Academic Planning Unit of the Federal University of Technology Minna is an
administrative structure established as an integral part of the office of the Vice-Chancellor. The
Unit is charged with the responsibility of providing guidance for the orderly, balanced and
qualitative academic development of the University for effective service delivery and quality
leadership.
The Academic Planning Unit is expected to collate, manage and interpret data to guide the
academic development of the University and to ensure compliance with government policies,
notably, the National Universities Commission (NUC) Benchmark Minimum Academic
Standards (BMAS), the University statute as it relates to academic matters and other academic
requirements of the Senate. The Director of Academic Planning (DAP) reports directly to the
Vice-Chancellor.

Mission

To be a leading Academic Planning Unit in the Nigerian University system that will ensure
excellent service delivery and orderly academic development of the University in the
performance of its statutory functions of teaching, research as well as community service.

Vision

To ensure orderly academic development through entrepreneurship-oriented curriculum, research
into current and emerging technologies, and community services with the aid of Information and
Communication Technology to meet challenges of the 21 st century.

  1. Preparation of University annual recurrent budget in collaboration with the Bursary Unit.
  2. Projection of student enrolment figures and corresponding staff strength.
  3. Performance analysis of the University’s budget.
  4. Computation of full-time equivalents (FTE) for all programmes.
  5. Preparation of University calendar for stable academic delivery.
  6. Initiating and maintaining a database of statistics on students and staff for purpose of planning, budgeting, and other requirements.
  7. Collection, analysis and interpretation of data from the relevant departments/Units for the University’s annual statistical trends.
  8. Providing periodic statistics to the Federal Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission, National Manpower Board and Bureau of Statistics, private sector organizations, NGOs and individual researchers on demand.
  9. Provision of information to the University management on various University operations for internal planning.
  10. Publication of University records, statistics and reports as demanded.
  11. Documenting and storing information on academic programmes of the University.
  12. Coordination and review of the University curricula in line with NUC policies and in line with international academic best practices.
  13. Ensuring that the University operates within its Strategic Plan for coordinated development.
  14. Working with Schools and Departments to prepare, review and monitor their academic plans and identify areas of potential development.

Prof. John Kolo Alhassan is a Professor of Computer Science. He completed his PhD in 2014 from Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria and became a professor in 2020. He was a research fellow at the United Institute of Informatics Problems, National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (UIIP NASB) Minsk, Republic of Belarus. He has held several administrative positions such as Level Adviser, Project Coordinator, Departmental Examination Officer, Postgraduate Coordinator, School Examination Officer, Head of Department (Cyber Security Science), Deputy Director, Academic Planning Unit and currently the Director of Academic Planning. He has served in several committees at the Departmental, School, University and National levels, notable among which are Chairman, School of ICT New Departments Committee, Chairman, SICT Scrutiny Committee, Member, Committee to Develop ICT Policy Document for Federal University of Technology, Minna, Member, University Research and Ethic Committee, Federal University of Technology, Minna and Member, TETFund Technical Advisory Group (TAG). He has over 80 publications in national and international journals and conferences. He has supervised several Undergraduate, PGD, MTech. and PhD students.

The DAP has also served as external examiner to several polytechnics and universities in the country. He served as a resource person to the National Universities Commission (NUC) in the resource verification and accreditation of programmes in several universities in the country. He is a member, Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN), Nigeria, Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), and Internet Society (ISOC).
