About the School

The School of Environmental Technology (SET) comprises five departments: Building, Estate Management and Valuation, Quantity Surveying, Urban and Regional Planning, and Surveying and Geoinformatics. All departments are fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and their respective professional regulatory bodies.

The School has experienced consistent growth in both student enrollment and staff strength over the years, reflecting its commitment to excellence in environmental technology education and research.

DEANSHIP

Alhaji M.B.A. Wuna served as the first Co-ordinator of the School from 1985 to 1998.  His regime saw the birth of all the six Departments.  Alhaji Wuna doubled as the Co-ordinator and Head of all Departments except Architecture during the period up till 1994 when other Departments started to have their own H.O.Ds during various accreditation exercises.  Other Deans who have served the School include:

Brief History of the School

The School of Environmental Technology was established in January 1986, commencing academic activities with a single department: Architecture. Over the years, the School has expanded significantly, with additional departments established at various stages as outlined below:

Pioneering Staff

Notable among the pioneering staff were Alhaji Muhammed Wuna (Retired), Alhaji Idris Alhassan (Chief Architect, Physical Planning and Development Unit, FUT Minna), and Arch. J.S. Kaura (now with the Federal Capital Development Authority, Abuja). Others include Arch. M.K. Ibrahim (Late), Arc. (Dr.) Kristian Stangel (a Polish national who later returned to Poland), Mrs. Stangel (a fine artist), Dr. O.C. Nsude (now in private practice), and Mr. Yusuf Dada (Building Department and former Director, Physical Planning and Development Unit, FUT Minna).

Special mention must be made of the contributions of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who served in the School during the late 1980s and subsequently became permanent staff. These include Arc. Tony Anunobi (Late), Arc. Bello Mohammed, Mr. J.E. Idiake, QS (Late), and Mr. Mac Dumo Barango (former Head of Department, Quantity Surveying, Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt).

Formative Years and Expansion

During the School’s formative years, students spent three years in the Foundation School within the School of Science and Science Education, completing common courses in sciences before commencing their professional studies upon meeting the required standards.

By 1990, the School was poised for expansion with the establishment of additional departments. Pioneering staff recruited for these departments included Mr. S.O. Oyegbile (later Dr.) and Mr. G.O. Olayonwa (later moved to Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa) for the Estate Management Department; Mal. Ahmadu Alfa and Mal. M.B. Muhammed (both fine artists) for Architecture; Mr. Beter Tsado (a Transport Engineer, now with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation) and Mr. O.O. Morenikeji (now Professor and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic) for the Department of Urban and Regional Planning; Mr. (now Dr.) P.O. Lawal, Alhaji Bolaji Suleiman, Mr. Khalilulahi, and Mal. M.O. Ibrahim for Quantity Surveying; and Mr. W.P. Akanmu (now Professor) for the Building Department.

For Land Surveying and Photogrammetry, the pioneering staff included Mr. O.O. Odetunde and Mr. S.O. Ajibade.
