Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineering Department of Federal University of Technology, Minna, has become a house hold name in the world of Chemical Engineering since its humble beginning in 1987 established by the Federal Government of Nigeria. It is one of the first five Departments in the School of Engineering & Engineering Technology, of the University whose main aim was to produce high quality Chemical Engineers of world standard.

Chemical Engineering Department evolved when a working committee on Chemical Engineering programme under the Chairmanship of Prof. S.A. Sanni of the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, was set up by the then Vice Chancellor, Prof. J.O. Ndagi, the pioneer Vice Chancellor. The Committee met on 11th through 13th March, 1987 with the following terms of reference:

To draw up a curriculum for Chemical Engineering Degree programme and provide course content.

To advise on the basic infrastructural facilities necessary to run the course, such as equipment and laboratories and to advise on any other relevant matter necessary to the successful take off of the program. The programme developed by the above Committee was put into effect that same year with students input from 200 Level of the general engineering program. The first sets of graduates were turned out in 1990.

Since its inception, Chemical Engineering Department had graduated students, whose value has been adjudged very satisfactory and are in high demand in both government and industry and invariably serving the technological needs of the nation. More importantly, the target for its establishment is to give effect to the nation’s drive for the much-needed self-reliance in Science, Engineering and Technology in general. Specifically, its objectives are to give projects of high quality standard characterized by professional, theoretical and practical preparation which will invariably depict the level of work undergone by our graduates throughout their career, to encourage external moderation which will avail the Department the opportunity of having inputs and expertise of long serving senior academic in sister universities; and by so doing produce trained Chemical Engineers that can meet the national manpower requirements.

Chemical Engineering Department was up-graded to world class by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) in 2008 through 2010. The up-grading project included building of a Chemical Engineering complex, procurement of some vital laboratory equipment and furniture. In the year 2011, the Department was again selected by PTDF as one of the Nigerian Universities that will be participating in the training of PTDF local scholars both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in areas of oil and gas. The Department was also selected as the Headquarter for the Federal University of Technology (F.U.T) Minna, PTDF local scholarship scheme.

To be a world leading Department of Chemical Engineering with competent human resources and with her graduates well versed in both the theoretical principles and practical applications of the course for the benefit of Nigerians and the entire world.

To produce skilled Man Power, who understands Chemical Engineering fundamentals, principles and technical knowledge that is capable of generating local technologies for national technological development and advancement.
