INTRODUCTION

The Department of Soil Science and Land Management formerly called Department of Soil Science until 2013/2014 session was established in 1987. It was created out of the then Department of Crop Production. The Department had as its pioneer staff two academic, one technical and two administrative staff. Today, the Department has grown to a strength of 13 academic staff, 1 sabbatical lecturer, 5 technical and 2 administrative staff. The Department does not have an approved undergraduate degree programme of its own; rather, the undergraduate academic curriculum forms part of the B. Agric. Tech degree programme of the University. However, the Department offers postgraduate degree programmes at Masters and PhD levels. The Department is committed to cutting edge training and research and the development of highly skilled and versatile manpower that are relevant not only to the developmental needs of the country, but also very competitive in the international arena.

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the academic programme of the Department of Soil Science and Land Management is to produce creative graduates of Soil and Environmental Sciences who are well grounded scientifically, to enable them explore and effectively transform agricultural and agro-allied resources of the nation into goods and services, and also to be key players in the promotion of sustainable use of soil and water resources and the effective conservation of the nation’s environmental resources.
