The Department of Educational Technology at the School of Science and Technology Education (SSTE), Federal University of Technology Minna (FUT, Minna), recently held a one-day research workshop for postgraduate students titled “Research Methodology Towards Excellence in Research Output.” The event took place on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at the Lecture Theatre, Bosso Campus.
In his opening address, Dean of SSTE, Prof. Amosa Isiayaka Gambari, lauded the department’s initiative in organizing the workshop. He emphasized the importance of equipping postgraduate students with the skills needed for superior research output, securing research grants, thesis writing, research management, and maintaining academic integrity. Prof. Gambari encouraged participants to engage fully with the resource persons’ presentations.
Prof. Gambari presented a paper on “Research Grants,” highlighting that grants are awarded based on the merits of research proposals and can cover various expenses, including personnel, equipment, materials, travel, and publication costs. He underscored that the primary objective of research grants is to advance knowledge, promote innovation, and address specific social and technological challenges.
Dr. Akawo A. Yaki from the Department of Science Education discussed “Critical Academic Writing.” He stressed that critical academic writing is essential for academic success, as it demonstrates the ability to think critically, evaluate information, and develop well-supported arguments. He noted that these skills are valuable for professional and real-world applications.
Dr. Fatimah Abduldayan, Chairperson of the Nigeria Library Association, Niger State Chapter, shared insights on “Research Data Management.” She highlighted the importance of data management and academic integrity in fostering transparency and responsible conduct in research. Dr. Abduldayan emphasized the benefits of managing research data, uploading datasets to institutional repositories, and adhering to postgraduate guidelines and ethical policies.
Mr. John Oguntoyinbo, an ex-corps member who served in the SSTE, conducted a practical session on using Visme and Gomma for PowerPoint presentations.
In his closing remarks, Acting Head of the Department of Educational Technology, Prof. Saidu C. Tukura, thanked all the speakers for their excellent presentations and urged participants to apply the knowledge gained from the workshop in their research endeavors.
