Directorate of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer

Federal University of Technology Minna > Directorate of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer

The Directorate of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer (DIPTT) started in 2018 as one of the Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Offices (IPTTOs) established by the National for Technology Acquisition and Promotion  (NOTAP) in tens of tertiary institutions across Nigeria. The University appointed the pioneer officers of the IPTTO on 13th August 2018 with Prof. M.A. Olutoye as Coordinator. The office was commissioned by the Director-General of NOTAP on 17th April, 2019. In November, 2024, the Governing Council of the University approved the upgrade of the office to the status of a Directorate. The Directorate of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer is the office for administering and implementing the University’s Intellectual Property Policy.

The main objectives of the Directorate are to promote the creation and commercialisation of FUT Minna’s Intellectual Property (IP) and takes care of conflicting interests that may arise from the generation and commercialisation of Intellectual Property by:

  • Promoting IP disclosure and protecting IP with socio-economic impact
  • Encouraging and assisting in the provision of mutually beneficial rewards for the University and its staff who transfer Intellectual Property to the public through commercialisation and licensing
  • Ensuring that both Intellectual Property and other products of research are made available to the public through an efficient and timely process of technology transfer
  • Ensuring that the University’s name and insignias are properly used and that it receives a fair share of any commercial benefits from the use of its name and assets
  • Educating and sensitising members of the University community on the need for maintenance of strict confidentiality in matters relating to IP.
  • Promoting a culture of creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship and community impact

The Directorate has four units each headed by a Manager: Legal and Compliance Unit, Operations Unit, Business Development and Marketing Unit, and Finance Unit. Through the office, the University has protected 18 innovations (18 patents), 2 copyright and commercialise some. It continues to work hard with other members of the University to promote the generation, protection and commercialization of intellectual property
