The Mechatronics Engineering Department, Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, has organized the 2024 Mentor-Mentee Academic Retreat for its students. The event took place on Friday, July 26, 2024, at the SICT Lecture Theater, Main Campus.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Engr. Prof. Abdullahi Mohammed, in his opening remark, expressed enthusiasm for the program, emphasizing its goal to raise awareness about the importance of mentorship and inform students about the available mentoring opportunities within the university. Prof. Kuta encouraged students to fully engage with the program to maximize the opportunities it presents.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Coordinator of the Mentor-Mentee Scheme, Engr. Dr. Kufre Esenowo Jack, highlighted the unique aspects of the mentorship program within the department. He noted that the initiative has led to the production of academic papers, acquisition of research grants, and the development of industry-relevant skills among students.
The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Ikechukwu A. Diugwu from the Department of Project Management, School of Innovative Technology. He emphasized the ample job opportunities available in the country and pointed out that the main challenge is the lack of necessary skills among the workforce. Prof. Diugwu praised the department’s efforts in fostering effective communication between mentors and mentees, which is essential in bridging the skills gap.
Also, the Former Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Prof. Suleiman Sadiku, gave an inspiring address, reflecting on the history and achievements of the department. He applauded the students’ performances and the coordinator’s efforts, urging the department to continue upholding its high standards of excellence.
On the Department Updates and Encouragement , Session Coordinator, Engr. Dr. Jubril A. Bala, discussed the recent rebranding of the Mechatronics Engineering Department and its focus on equipping students with entrepreneurial and industry-relevant skills. He noted that this initiative has attracted various employers nationwide who are eager to recruit students from the department. Dr. Bala encouraged students to stay positive and committed, emphasizing that their experiences as mentees are crucial for shaping successful careers.

– Ani Emmanuel Chigozie (500L): “Ethical Use of AI in Research Writing”
The 2024 Mentor-Mentee Academic Retreat underscored the department’s dedication to providing its students with essential skills and knowledge, preparing them for successful careers. The event was a testament to the department’s commitment to excellence and its proactive approach to student development.
