About Us
The Centre for Preliminary and Extra-Mural Studies (CPES) was established through a statute of the Federal University of Technology Minna Governing Council on 30th July, 2003 with the name Centre for Remedial and Extra-Mural studies (CRES). Its new name CPES was adopted by the Senate of the University to reflect the introduction of Preliminary degree, Certificate as well as Diploma programmes on 27th February, 2008. The Centre is responsible for the coordination and running of all academic programmes that are not funded by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The Centre was restructured in 2010 to offer only Pre-degree and IJMB.

To be a Centre of academic excellence expanding educational opportunities for competent manpower development needs of the nation.

The mission of CPES is to prepare candidates for entry into various degree programmes of the University.

THE PRELIMINARY DEGREE PROGRAMME:

This is a one year programme designed for candidates from catchment States of the University, who have five (5) credits in science based disciplines, and to prepare them for full time degree programme. Subjects required are: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural sciences, Economics and Geography. The subjects requirement vary from department to department, however, English Language and Mathematics are common to all.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Candidates are expected to have at least five credits level passes at credits level to include English Language, Mathematics and any other three from Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Biology/Agricultural science/Health Science and Economics. The Preliminary Degree Programme is two terms of eighteen weeks each, beginning from September of every year.

IJMB PROGRAMME (A-LEVEL):
This is an A-Level programme with the headquarter at Institute of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Candidates are expected to sit for a Final Examination IJMBE conducted by IJMB A.B.U. Zaria in February every year. It prepares candidates for admission into 200 level in Nigerian Universities and abroad. The IJMB is a 12 months programme run in 48 weeks beginning from June of each year. ENTRY REQUIREMENT Candidates are expected to have at least five credits which must include: English Language, Mathematics and any three of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography and Economics.
