History of the Department

The establishment of the Department of Library and Information Technology was first mooted in 1991 by Dr Nassir Bello, the then University Librarian.  The vision did not see the light of the day until 26th July 2000 when the Senate considered and approved the programme. The programme was eventually inspected and finally approved by the National University commission (NUC) on the 12th September, 2001. Academic activities of the new Department commenced in earnest during the 2001/2002 session. The department was was initially housed in the then School of Science and Science Education (SSSE).

When the School of Information and Communication Technology (SICT) was  established the Department was one of  the departments that was moved to form one of the pioneer departments of SICT. Since then, the Department has been moving from SICT to SSTE on different occasions to fulfill the National University Commission (NUC) accreditation requirement. The department has been turning out many graduates of repute since 2007 to date. patek philippe replica watches

Majority of the graduates have been gainfully employed. The Library and Information Science (LIS) programme started in line with the mandate establishing the Federal University of Technology, Minna which was also in line with the national demand.  The national demand then was and is still to develop human capacity who will fill the gap for the much needed technology in a rapidly advancing technologically – knitted world.  The LIS programme therefore started with a view to producing highly skillful and versatile information professionals who would be able to use their wealth of information prowess and intellectual acumen to positively affect a developing country like Nigeria which is in dire need of technological advancement and breakthrough. The graduates of the programme are expected to be highly skillful in the present Information and technologically driven world.  They are expected to have adequate skill to package and re-package information in any sector of the society that they are found. Therefore, they should be able to stand shoulder to shoulder with graduates in other academic fields (like engineering, medicine, etc.) and their intellectual cum practical ingenuity in information handling especially on the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) are expected to be very high.
