About the Department

Educational Technology Department is in the School of Science and Technology Education, Federal University of Technology Minna. The Department was carved out from Science Education Department and currently runs both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. It has a total of ten academic staff and two supporting staff. Presently, there are three full professors, four Associate professors, one senior lecturer, one lecturer II and one Assistant lecturer in the Department.

History of the Department

The Department of Educational Technology was carved out of the Department of Science Education. Prior to the establishment of the Department, Postgraduate programmes in Educational Technology were being offered by the Department of Science Education alongside Science Education programmes like Biology Education, Chemistry Education, Geography Education, Mathematics Education and Physics Education programmes. With the establishment of the Department of Educational Technology at the beginning of 2015/2016 academic session, members of academic staff in the Department of Science Education who specialize in Educational Technology were moved to the new Department. Postgraduate students of Educational Technology were also transferred. Dr T. O. Alabi who was the Head of Department of Science Education became the first Head of Educational Technology Department from 2015 to February, 2020. At the commencement of the Department, it had its resource verification and also had a full accreditation on 17th to 19th November, 2019. When Dr. T. O. Alabi’s tenure of office ended in February 2020, Dr. C.S. Tukura was appointed the next Head of Department from March 2nd 2020 till date.

Dr. C. S. Tukura is the current Head of Department of Educational Technology, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria. He previously served Niger State Ministry of Education for twenty years (1988 – 2008) as a teacher and administrator before transferring his services to the University. Dr. C. S. Tukura has successfully served in the University as Level Adviser, Assistant Examination Officer, School Examination Officer, School Representative at the Senate and members of various committees. His membership of professional body includes: Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and Educational and Media and Technology Association of Nigerian (EMTAM).  Tukura C. S. received B.Ed.in Social Studies from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Nigeria, MTech. Educational Technology from Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, Nigerian and PhD in Educational Technology from University of Nigerian Nsukka, Nigeria.  Dr. Tukura C. S. is a recipient of School of Science and Technology Education award for his contributions to improving and promoting the school (SSTE). To his credit, Dr. C. S. Tukura has written and published several articles in reputable journals, international and national journals.

Vision

Educational Technology Department is structured to be known nationally and internationally for the preparation of innovative professional teachers who can demonstrate competence and resourcefulness in instructional design, development, implementation and evaluation of instructional media required and utilize such to enrich teaching and learning process.

Mission

To produce professional teachers who are technologically and technically skilled to develop instructional media and utilize such to enrich teaching and learning process.

Educational technology (commonly abbreviated as edutech, or edtech) is the combined use of computer hardware, software, and educational theory and practice to facilitate learning. When referred to with its abbreviation, edtech, it often refers to the industry of companies that create educational technology

There are two modes of admission into BTech Educational Technology programme.

Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) (100 level for 5years programme)

Candidates can be admitted in to this programme provided they satisfy the university minimum entry qualification which stipulates five (5) O’ level credits, including English language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and any other relevant science from Biology, Geography, Agricultural Science or Technical education subject in WAEC/NECO/NABTEB O’ level or equivalent at not more than two sittings. These candidates must in addition sit for UTME and post UTME in relevant subjects and obtain a minimum score of the cut-off mark as stipulated from time to time.

 

DIRECT ENTRY:

Direct entry (3 or 2 years BTech educational Technology) must satisfy the general O’ level requirements for admission in to Federal University of Technology, Minna. In addition, candidates must possess NCE with a minimum of credit/merit in Science Education or Technical education courses. ND at lower credit level, NCE or HND holders shall come in at 300 level while candidates with ND come in at 200 level.

  1. Developing instructional materials and donating them to secondary schools within the host community.
  2. Organizing extra mural lectures for students within the host community preparing for WAEC and NECO examination
  3. Posting our students to Secondary Schools within the host community for their Practical Teaching.
  4. Training primary and Secondary School teachers within the host community on how to improvise instructional materials.

Most research outputs from the Department are innovative and center majorly on digital learning packages.
