The Department of Educational Technology, domiciled in the School of Science and Technology Education (SSTE) at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, is committed to the preparation of innovative, professionally competent teachers equipped for the demands of contemporary educational practice. The Department’s philosophy is anchored in both the University’s Academic Brief and the National Policy on Education, with a clear focus on training scientifically knowledgeable and technologically skilled educators capable of meeting global best practices in Educational Technology.
Our programme delivers a rigorous curriculum leading to the award of B.Tech, PGD, M.Tech, and PhD degrees in Educational Technology. Core areas of study span instructional design, development, implementation and evaluation of instructional media, multimedia learning, distance and open education, digital learning package development, and the integration of emerging technologies in teaching and learning. Through this curriculum, the Department aims to raise the creative capacities and capabilities of students, enabling them to develop innovative teaching models and apply the latest instructional equipment and educational technologies in diverse learning environments.
Graduates of the Department serve as professional teachers, instructional designers, educational media specialists, and e-learning developers across schools, universities, and the corporate sector, both within Nigeria and internationally. Committed to excellence in research and community engagement, the Department regularly develops and donates instructional materials to secondary schools, organises extramural lectures for students preparing for national examinations, and trains primary and secondary school teachers in instructional material improvisation.
The Department of Educational Technology is a new Department carved out of the Department of Science Education. Prior to the establishment of the Department, postgraduate programmes in Educational Technology were being offered by the Department of Science Education alongside Science Education programmes such as Biology Education, Chemistry Education, Geography Education, Mathematics Education, and Physics Education. With the establishment of the Department of Educational Technology at the beginning of the 2015 academic session, members of academic staff in the Department of Science Education who specialized in Educational Technology were moved to the new Department. Postgraduate students of Educational Technology were also transferred, and undergraduate admission was granted to fresh students at the 100 Level (through UTME) and 300 Level (through Direct Entry). To produce professional teachers who are technologically and technically skilled to develop instructional media and utilize such to enrich teaching and learning process.
Educational technology (commonly abbreviated as edutech, or edtech) is the combined use of computer hardware, software, and educational theory and practice to facilitate learning. When referred to with its abbreviation, edtech, it often refers to the industry of companies that create educational technology
There are two modes of admission into BTech Educational Technology programme.
Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) (100 level for 5years programme)
Candidates can be admitted in to this programme provided they satisfy the university minimum entry qualification which stipulates five (5) O’ level credits, including English language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and any other relevant science from Biology, Geography, Agricultural Science or Technical education subject in WAEC/NECO/NABTEB O’ level or equivalent at not more than two sittings. These candidates must in addition sit for UTME and post UTME in relevant subjects and obtain a minimum score of the cut-off mark as stipulated from time to time.
DIRECT ENTRY:
Direct entry (3 or 2 years BTech educational Technology) must satisfy the general O’ level requirements for admission in to Federal University of Technology, Minna. In addition, candidates must possess NCE with a minimum of credit/merit in Science Education or Technical education courses. ND at lower credit level, NCE or HND holders shall come in at 300 level while candidates with ND come in at 200 level.
Most research outputs from the Department are innovative and center majorly on digital learning packages.
