About the Department

The mandate of the Department is “Creativity and Technology in a Cultural Context.” It takes cognizance of the symbiotic nature of the University’s philosophy and the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria. The Department is committed to producing Architects who possess first class scientific, technical and professional know-how so as to be versatile in all aspects of protection, management and responsive design of the environment. The realization of these ideals is enhanced by the courses offered in the department and participation in the students’ work experience programme in their second and fourth years respectively. The department is accredited by both National University Commission (NUC) and Architect Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON).

Brief history of the department

The Department of Architecture was established in 1986 as one of the six departments in the School of Environmental Technology (SET). The first head of department was Dr. G. C. Nsude. It currently runs an undergraduate (BTech) and postgraduate (MTech & Ph.D.) programmes in architecture respectively. The BTech is a five-year programme minimum duration and maximum of seven and a half years for candidates who begin from 100 level. Candidates who begin from 200 level have a minimum of four years and a maximum of six and a half years. Those who begin from 300 level have a minimum of three years and a maximum of four and a half years.

The master’s programme runs for three semesters in accordance with the postgraduate school stipulations regarding all masters’ programmes. The Ph.D. programme commenced in the 2003/2004 session, with a minimum duration of three years.

  1. Academic: 29 staff (Professor-5, Associate professor-3, Senior Lecturer-4, Lecturer I-13, Lecturer II-4, Visiting lecturer I-1, Assistant lecturer-0, Graduate assistant-0) The department also have 2 Volunteer Staff
  2. Technologists: 4 (Principal Technical Officer I-2, Senior Technical Officer-1, Higher Technical Officer-1).
  3. Administrative staff: 1, Office assistant 1

At present, the principal officers in the department include Head of Department- Dr. A. D. Isah, Examination Officer- Dr. L. A. Lawal, and Postgraduate Coordinator- Dr. O. K. Akande.

Vision

The vision of the department is to train students that would become world class professionals in the field of Architecture for both the national and international building industries.

Mission

The Department of Architecture will explore all available human, technical and material resources at its disposal to create a functional and conducive learning environment. This is so that graduates from the Department can contribute and function effectively in the construction industry and society at large regardless of their location.

Dr Abubakar Danladi Isah is a graduate with a Bachelor and a Master Degree in Architecture from the Federal University of Technology, Minna (1992-2000). He also holds a PhD Degree in Architecture from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (2015). He is an expert in Human Behaviour & the Built Environment at the Federal University of Technology Minna, Nigeria where he is presently an Associate Professor. He provides academic support and research direction to postgraduate students.  His research support includes; reviewer and editorial expert for journals and conferences. His publications cover research methodology, behavioural studies and space use in the built environment. He authored the book Urban Public Housing in Northern Nigeria: The Search for indigeneity and Cultural Practices in Design, and co-authored- Measures of People and Space Interactions in the Built Environment towards Responsive Development.

Dr. A. D. Isah is a Registered Consulting Architect licenced by ARCON, with full membership of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) as well as Association of Architectural Educators (AARCHES). He served as a member of the Library Committee of the Nigerian Institute of Architects and has supervised students for Professional Practice Examination on behalf of the Institute. He has also served in various capacities at the Niger State chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Architects. He has also been engaged in several community development projects at state and local government levels, ranging from building developments at design, supervision and construction capacities, mainly in residential and institutional projects.

Admission requirements

UTME (Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination) Entry Requirement

Candidates who have successfully completed the Senior School Certificate and obtained  five O-level credits in Mathematics, Physics, English and any two of the following subjects: Chemistry, Technical drawing, Economics, Geography, Building Construction, Fine Art and Surveying are considered qualified. Admission should be through acceptable pass at the Entrance examination organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Candidates, who pass the five required subjects of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English, and Geography or Biology with a minimum of C grade from the Pre-Degree Programme of this university, may also be considered for admission. Candidates so admitted commence at the 100 level of the programme.        

Direct Entry Requirement

A candidate who fulfils ordinary level requirements and in addition holds a National Diploma (ND) or Higher National Diploma (HND) certificate in Architectural Technology at credit level will be considered for direct entry admission into the 200 level or 300 level of the programme respectively.

A candidate who fulfils ordinary level requirements and who has obtained GCE Advanced level or equivalent passes in Mathematics and Physics, and Mathematics or Physics and any other subject may also be admitted at the 200 level of the programme.

In the first year, the students will study some basic sciences together with a few introductory courses (see list of compulsory and elective courses) that will prepare them for the subsequent years ahead. The entire programme is designed to accommodate students with background in social and physical sciences subjects who may wish to undertake the programme.

The duration for Bachelor of Technology (B-Tech.) is 5years.
