Public Health

About the Department

Public Health is one of the newly introduced programmes at the Federal University of Technology in 2024. The Department runs a five-year undergraduate programme leading to the award of a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree in Public Health. The programme is designed such that students take all requisite courses over five years across the different areas of Public Health.

The programme is designed to produce competent graduates who can serve as public health professionals both nationally and globally, by mastering the art and science of preventing diseases, protecting, and improving the health of communities and the population at large. This is achieved through research, promoting healthy lifestyles, and surveillance to prevent infections and injuries, while working as part of a team or individually.

The philosophy of the Public Health programme is to provide broad-based academic and professional training and competence that reflects the emphasis on the current national preventive healthcare system and services. The theoretical and practical knowledge imparted to graduates will enable them to fit into any lawful and decent profession in society.

History of the Department

The proposal for the establishment of the Department of Public Health was presented and approved by the Senate of the University in March 2024. This was followed by a resource verification exercise conducted by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in August 2024. The NUC granted approval for the establishment of the Department in September 2024. This was subsequently followed by the appointment of the pioneer Head of Department (HOD), Prof. O. P.
