Animal Biology

About the Department

The Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Animal Biology programme is designed to foster scientific understanding and technological expertise in the life sciences, emphasizing the study of animals and their interactions within ecosystems. Rooted in a technology-driven approach, this five-year programme aims to develop highly skilled graduates who can apply biological principles to real-world problems, advancing both knowledge and practice in the fields of Entomology, Environmental Biology, Parasitology, and Hydrobiology.

Brief History of the Department

The Department of Animal Biology is one of the academic Departments domiciled in the School of Life Sciences of the Federal University of Technology, Minna. Biological Sciences has been in existence since the inception of the University in 1983. In 2004, the Department was divulged of the Departments of Microbiology and Biochemistry while in 2013, Senate approved two options (Plant and Animal Biology) for the Department.

The Department of Animal Biology is one of the academic departments domiciled in the School of Life Sciences of the Federal University of Technology, Minna. It came into being in 2019 from the defunct Department of Biological Sciences, which had been in existence since the inception of the University in 1983. The Department has since run a broad-based training programme covering aspects of Applied Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, Parasitology, Entomology, Physiology (plant and animal), Hydrobiology, and Ecology, leading to the award of the B.Tech in Animal Biology. While all aspects of Biology are taught theoretically and complemented by practicals, emphasis is placed on the applied disciplines of Biology. The Department operates a two-semester system per session. The first year of the programme is spent studying basic sciences and a few liberal arts courses in order to provide sound knowledge of basic scientific concepts and their relationship to society, while in subsequent years students apply this scientific knowledge. The entire programme is flexibly structured to accommodate students with a physical science background and aptitude who are interested in various aspects of the programme.

On the 7th January 2018, Biological Sciences was splitted into the Department of Animal Biology and Plant Biology respectively. At this point we had to convert our Departmental Library to be the new Plant Biology HOD’s office for smooth take off and equal sharing assets between the two Departments. The University also graciously assisted in the purchase of office furniture, equipment and machines for Department of Plant Biology.

The Department has since then run a broad-based training leading to the award of B. Tech. Biology.

Vision

The programme aspires to provide students with opportunities to develop biological skills needed for competitive career actualization in Nigeria and beyond.

Mission

To produce highly motivated and enterprising graduates with up-to-date knowledge and skills in Animal and Environmental Biology for research, and application purposes.

Applied Entomology and Parasitology

Applied entomology covers the study of insects which are either beneficial or harmful to human beings. It deals with the ways in which beneficial insects like predators, parasitoids, pollinators or productive insects like honey bees, silkworm and lac insect can be best exploited for our welfare

Applied Hydrobiology

A hydrobiologist technician conducts field analysis for hydrobiology. They identify plants and living species, locate their habitat, and count them. They also identify pollutants and nuisances that can affect the aquatic fauna and flora. They take the samples and write reports of their observations for publications

Collaborations/partnerships

  1. The Entomology unit of the Department has been consistently researching and evolving strategies for the control of mosquitoes. The recently have established partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health on the control of malaria vectors in and around Niger State with the Department being recognized as a sentinel centre. Prof. I.K. Olayemi is the Principal Investigator for this research which is funded by Global Fund and is expected to end by the year 2021 with possible extension.

  1. The Parasitology unit of the Department discovered eleven (11) gene types of Plasmodium falciparum responsible for the transmission of malaria in Minna. Also, the head of this unit, Prof. I.C.J. Omalu has on various occasions within the year served as consultant to SITESAVER, an international body for the control of malaria in some parts of North Western, Nigeria. Also, the Department was involved in the campaign for the eradication of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) with road walks, seminars and public lectures conducted in January 2020 and 2021 respectively.
  2. The Department is involved in several research collaborations/Partnership Engagement nationally and internationally, which include among others, University of Mississippi, Mississippi, United States of America on the USAID sponsored programs. There is an existing memorandum of understanding between the University of Mississippi and FUT Minna with DILCA. Also, there is collaboration between Hydrobiology unit and the Institute for Water Research, Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa.
  3. The Department is currently collaborating with several environmental companies for example, Environmental Health Solutions and FISAS Ltd in Abuja and YIF in Cameroon in carrying out Environmental Impact Assessment exercises within the country and beyond.
