Library and Information Technology

About the Department

The establishment of Department of Library Information Technology was first proposed in the year 1991 by Dr. Nasiru Bello the then University Librarian. The idea was letter rekindled in 1998 during the Annual Conference of the Nigerian Library Association (Niger State Chapter). This time around, it was decided that the proposal be pursued with vigour and the organization promised to give its support. The name of the Department was changed from Library and Information Science to Department of Library Information Technology to conform to the lay down rules and regulations concerning establishment of a department in any Universities of Technology.

The proposal was approved by the University Management with the support of the then Vice-Chancellor in person of Professor M. A. Daniyan. It was also advised that the department be routed the School of Science and Science Education to the University Academic Planning and Curriculum Development Committee. Thereafter, a three-man committee was set up to draw a tentative curriculum for the new department. The members of the committee include: Mr. J. J. Kolo – chairman, Mall. Yakubu Mohammed and Mrs. G.U. Oyedum.

The then Dean of the School of Science and Science Education, Professor K. R. Adeboye made a lot of input to the curriculum. His personal commitment to the programme manifested in approving the programme by the Senate promptly. After the initial delay, the proposal scaled through both the School of Science and Science Education Board and the Academic planning and Curriculum development Committee. Some suggestions and minor amendments were made to perfect the curriculum of the proposed programme to conform to the National Universities Commission’s (NUC), Minimum Academic Standard. The department officially started from the 2001/2002 academic session.
