The Department of Crop Production was created in 1987, one year after the establishment of the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology. For a while it housed Soil Science and Land Management before it was established as a department. Similarly, the Department of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management as well as Department of Horticulture also emerged from the Department of Crop Production. The School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology has been unbundled into three schools, and presently, the Department is under the School of Agronomy and Forestry Technology (SAFT). In the year, 2024, Resource Verification Team visited the school for resource assessment visit to proposed academic programmes. By February, 2025, the Executive Secretary of National University Commission has considered and approved the establishment of the full-time mode of the programme (B.Tech. Crop Science). The Department has graduated several students since its inception. They are working in various fields of Agriculture; some are Teachers/Lecturers, and others are self-employed.
