AWAU ELECTION: STUDENTS’ UNION CONGRATULATES PROF BALA • We have Zero Tolerance for Sexual Harassment - VC

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the Federal University of Technology, Minna has congratulated the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abdullahi Bala, fsssn, on his emergence as the President of the Association of West Africa Universities (AWAU).



The event took place last week Friday, October 25, 2019 at the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Main Campus.

Speaking during the courtesy visit, the outgoing SUG President, Comrade Fajoye Ayodeji Mathew (Package) said the entire students of the University were proud of the Vice-Chancellor for bringing yet another honour to the institution, adding that the VC’s victory at the poll was a testament to his proven track records as a renowned scholar and administrator.

“We are here this afternoon on behalf of over 20,000 students of this University to congratulate you on your emergence as the President of the Association of West Africa Universities. We have no doubt in your ability to succeed and take the association to greater heights,” Comrade Fajoye stated.

The SUG President who was accompanied by the President-elect of the Union, Comrade Damilare Ibikunle and other Executive members prayed that God will give the VC the wisdom and strength to take the Association to an enviable height.
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Bala commended the Union for coming to felicitate with him, adding that his victory at the poll was for all staff and students of the University.

The VC disclosed that he attended the meeting as an ordinary member of the Association but was surprised when he was nominated and unanimously elected as the President of the Association, noting that his choice was premised on the fact that FUT, Minna is doing well and they felt that the University should serve as a model for the Association and other universities in the sub-region.

“I am honoured by the recognition by members of the Association judging from the fact that I am less than two years old as a Vice-Chancellor. It is also an onerous responsibility for all of us,” the VC disclosed.

Prof. Bala said he would rigorously pursue the internationalization of programmes among members of the Association where students can run a session or semester in any of the universities within the Association whereby the credit units load earned will be transfered to other institution and it will be counted. He revealed that the problem of language will be solved through exchange programmes for staff and students among member universities without compromising on quality.

“I look forward to having another interesting period as the President of the Association”, the Don stated.

He thanked the Out-going President for working for the interest of the students and urged the President-elect to continue in that regard.

“I urge you not to betray the confidence repose in you by the students. Management will give you all the necessary support that you need to succeed. If you come to me for the interest of the students, I will oblige you all you need but if it is for personal interest, I will not oblige your request,” Prof. Bala advised.

On the issue of sexual harassment, the VC advised the Union to come up with innovative mechanism that will make it easy for victim of sexual harassment to make a formal complaint, adding that the University cannot act on mere humour. He added that the University has zero tolerance for sexual harassment.

Highpoint of the visit was the presentation of a customized congratulatory card to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Bala by the Union.
