He provided the tips when he presented a public lecture titled: Office Ergonomic: Practical Solution for a Safer Workplace on Thursday, September 6 2018 at the Caverton Lecture Theatre, Main Campus.
He said Ergonomic is a word drawn from the science of nature, which means laws or rules of work while office ergonomic is a branch of ergonomic that deal specifically with office environment. According to him, “the concept of ergonomic include; workers safety and health by addressing muscle force required to perform various tasks. It also considers the physical and mental capabilities and limits of the workers as he or she interacts with equipment, task and the working environment,” he disclosed
The don stated that office has been considered a relatively safe and healthy place to work and that the modern office environment presents an array of potential hazards that can be avoided by taking simple precautions.
“Accidents that occur in offices are frequently due to poorly design office environment and improper office procedures. And the rate of office accidents decline when office workers are informed of potential hazards and safe work procedures.” he stated.
He said that by implementing office ergonomic methods, many risk factors present in office environment may be recognized and controlled, diminishing the risk of injury and to prevent such ill-health in the office, various issues must be addressed such as provision of welfare facilities for office workers, work equipment should be used in accordance with instructions.
On the benefits of office ergonomic, the don disclosed that it increases productivity and makes the job safer by preventing injury and illness, it also reduces absenteeism and increased moral, making the job more pleasant by reducing physical and mental stress.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution Prof. Abdullahi Bala, fsssn, commended the lecturer for delivering the lecture, adding that the presentation on office ergonomic is an eye opener as safety does not require money. He said for us to conveniently and comfortably do what we are supposed to do, the environment must be conducive and safe and Management would try as much as possible to do its best in terms of making the environment comfortable and plans has been put in place to establish a safety office in the University.
“Occasionally, there may be one problem or the other and because in most of the environment we find ourselves, we do not have trained personnel that look at issues of safety from the professional standpoint,” he stated.
Prof. Bala later presented a plague to Dr. Mohammed in appreciation of his effort in ensuring that workplace is safe and healthy for workers.
