He made this call on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 during the Grand Finale of 2018 Information Technology Service day and award of prizes and certificates to 400 ICT trained Senior Secondary School students by the University.

Prof. Bala said that the three-fold mission of every university is teaching, research and community service and the institution, having attained 35 years of age, deems it fit to have a greater impact of its presence within the community by performing its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

“One thing we feel will impact on our youth is capacity building in ICT because there is hardly anything that is not driven by information and communication technology now so we have taken it upon ourselves to continue in the capacitation of our community,” Prof. Bala said.

The Vice-Chancellor maintained that a one-off training is not sufficient for the students and that he would have loved to organise the training annually so that the students are proficient in the area of computer by regularly practising but the University is constrained in the area of resources. He dwelled on the need for the State Government to put into effect a kind of ICT initiative where all the secondary schools in Niger State are provided with computer laboratories to enhance their computer skills and urged private individuals and philanthropist to show their support.

The helmsman congratulated the winners and other participants of the e-quiz competition for being among the best and urged them to continue to develop their computer skills adding that they would find the certificates useful later in life.

The VC who commended the staff of ITS for their initiative and commitment and pledged Management continued support. He also praised the authorities of the participating schools for preparing their students for the competition.

Delivering a goodwill message, the Emir of Minna, Alhaji (Dr.) Umar Farouq Bahago, represented by the Vice-Chancellor, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Prof. Mohammad Nasir Maiturare commended the University for embarking on a very significant milestone by training the secondary school students on ICT, not only for examination purpose but for their educational development.

“I am glad that FUT, Minna is carrying out its own community engagement and has selected a very topical and relevant project,” the Emir said.

His Royal Highness noted that the world has become digitalized and IT is now the gateway to the world. He stressed that computer proficiency comes with practice and encouraged parents and schools to support ICT for their wards to compete favourably locally and nationally.
Niger State Commissioner for Basic Education, Hajiya Fatimah Madugu commended the effort of the University for coming up with the laudable project. She urged them to sustain it and spread it to all public schools across the State.

The Commissioner congratulated the winners and enjoined them to regard the achievement as a stepping stone to many good things to come. She stressed the need for the beneficiaries to regard themselves as lucky.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Acting Director, ITS, Dr. Adamu Mohammed disclosed that as part of the CSR of the institution to its immediate community it organised free hands-on computer fundamental and e-exams workshop for 400 students in eight public secondary schools selected from Chanchaga and Bosso Local Government Areas in Niger State.

Dr. Mohammed said the aim of the workshop was to sensitise and equip the students in the use of computer as a result of noticeable poor performance of students in computer based examinations.

The grand finale of the competition was held in the full glare of all dignitaries with the first position going to Father O’Conel Secondary School, Minna with 85 points over a hundred at a record time of 6 minutes 53 seconds; second position went to Army Day Secondary School with 75 points at 8 minutes 4 seconds and third position went to Hill Top Model Secondary School with 75 points at 8 minutes 51 seconds. The first position was presented a brand new Laptop /Free CISCO Get Connected Training, second position got a brand new Laptop/USB Flash Drive and third position won a brand new Laptop.

The Vice-Chancellor made the presentation to the best three students while the other participating students were presented certificates.

The participating secondary schools at the training were Maryam Babangida Girls Science College, Minna, Government Technical School, Chanchaga, Day Secondary School, Bosso, Army Day Secondary School, Minna, Day Secondary School, Tunga and Sir Ahmadu Bahago Memorial Secondary School, Minna.

At the end of the programme, thirty five students distinguished themselves coming first to third positions in their respective schools, while 19 contestants participated in the final quiz competition.
