As part of efforts to provide a conducive ambience for guests of the University and other visitors to the State capital, the Federal University of Technology, Minna has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Shelter Suites & Hotels for the construction of a 50-room hotel worth over N1 billion under the Build and operate arrangement.

The epochal signing ceremony took place on Tuesday, September 1, 2020 at the Conference room, Hawthorne Suites Area 11, Abuja.
Delivering his address at the well-attended event, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Bala expressed gratitude to Shelter Suites & Hotels for keying into the University’s development drive for the construction of a befitting hotel, which he described as the first major investment to be attracted by the institution from any private firm since inception.

He disclosed that the partnership with Shelter Suites and Hotels would also provide an additional stream of revenue for the University to complement subventions from the Federal Government.
“This investment is coming from a bonafide citizen of Minna and Niger State. It is an investment for a project that is in consonance with our desire for the development of the University through the inclusion of private investments into the University revenue stream.
“I want to congratulate Shelter Suites and FUT, Minna for this landmark development and also express gratitude to them for believing in us because it takes a serious firm to agree to invest in a multi-billion naira deal in a University. This project will provide us with a world-class environment for us to host our guests who visit the institution for external examinations, conferences, as well as other guests from town who desire a befitting place of relaxation,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.

Further, Prof. Bala expressed optimism that the company would expand the facilities over time based on its antecedents as a world-class service provider in the hospitality industry. He also thanked all the individuals who worked assiduously towards the realization of the deal.
In addition, the University boss said the decision to lead the University delegation from Minna to Abuja for the signing of the MoU was to further demonstrate the institution’s commitment to the partnership and to show the acceptability of the MoU to the generality of the University’s Management team.

Responding to the Vice-Chancellor’s speech, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Shelter Suites & Hotels, Mal. Faruk Aliyu commendedthe Management team of the University for their acceptance of the partnership, while expressing hope that the facilities would raise the ante of hospitality business in Niger State and Nigeria at large.

“It is our hope that the facilities will be used also by staff and students of the institution for relaxation. It will also serve as a way for us to give something back to our State, especially in the area of addressing the problem of unemployment and to provide work-place experience for students,” the MD disclosed

Mal. Aliyu assured the University’s Management of their commitment to the MoU, adding that contractors would be mobilized to site promptly with an initial take-off fund of N1 billion. Furthermore, the Managing Director stated that the project would be completed within 13 – 18 months.
Additionally, he thanked the Shelter Suites & Hotels team for working round the clock to get the necessary papers sorted out for the MoU to be signed and wished the University’s delegation a safe trip back to Minna.

Present at the MoU signing from the University team were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Yahaya Ahmed Iyaka; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Emmanuel Emeka Udensi; the Registrar, Mr. Amos Nmadu Kolo; the acting Bursar, Mrs. Rebecca Adi Adams and the acting Librarian, Dr. Abubakar Mohammed Bitagi.

Others include the Director, Directorate of Collaboration, Affiliations and Linkages, Prof. Johnson Segun Oyero; the Deputy-Director Legal Unit, Mrs. Evelyn Makun and the Deputy Director, Information and Publications Unit, Mrs. Lydia Legbo.

On the team of Shelter Suites & Hotels were; Project Director, Mrs. Udhedhe Olakpe, the General Manager, Hawthorne Suites, Mr. Alain Salameh, the Operation Manager, Mr. Elie Yammouni, the Administrative Manager, Mal. Audu Aliyu and others.
