The conference, held from Monday, 1st - Friday, 5th October, 2018 at the CPES Hall, Bosso Campus.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Bala, fsssn, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Emmanuel Udensi said, the annual conference has created a platform and an opportunity for both local and international community in education and research institutions to share their learning and research findings with various academics coming together to bring their knowledge to bear on ways to enhance science and technology education.

“It is no longer news that the educational system, especially in Africa is in a state that needs urgent and serious attention and the quality of research is not what it used to be,” he said.

The Dean, SSTE, Prof. Bernard Atsumbe in his welcome address said that, education is considered to be the only veritable tool for national and human development and despite the good attributes of education and what it can achieve and do for a nation, the Nigerian education system is bedeviled with uncountable number of factors that have impeded its growth.

Prof. Atsumbe defined pedagogy as an academic discipline and the study of how knowledge and skills are exchanged in educational context. He said it considers the interactions that take place during learning, adding that an effective teacher must have a range of teaching and learning tools that can be drawn upon and used in the classroom for effective learning to take place.

He said that the conference is a suitable platform for academics, industrialists, ICT guru’s, researchers and all stakeholders to meet, discuss and come up with a communique that will surmount the problems bedeviling our educational system.

The keynote speaker and workshop facilitator, Prof. Marc Schafer, Mathematics Education Department, Rhodes University, South Africa gave his lecture on the visualisation in the teaching and learning of Mathematics and Science.

He said visualisation is the ability, the process and the product of creation, interpretation and the use of reflection upon practice, stressing that imagination is more important than knowledge because we cannot assume that we all see the same thing. He added that visualisation also is a means of communicating and a key component in researching, problem solving and conceptual understanding.

According to him, visualisation is not explicitly emphasized by teachers because it allows learners to overcome the language barrier as pictures can speak volumes.

Prof. Isaac Olakanmi Abimbola, Professor of Science Education, University of Ilorin, presented the lead paper on the topic, “Innovative Instrumental Strategies and Perfect Understanding.”

He stated that the purpose of the teacher is to make students know all what they are taught and more importantly to find out what the student do not know. There is also the need for research, that focuses on what students fail to learn.

Prof. Abimbola said that, misconception is what we know is wrong while alternative conception is what we are not sure of and a normal instruction is usually not effective in changing students misconceptions and alternative conception to accepted or correct conception.

The lead paper presenter stressed that, teachers and students at all levels should ensure that they own standard dictionaries of their subjects, teachers should illustrate instrument using correct objects first, before thinking alternatives, teachers should also always use projection equipment, flip charts, chalk and white board to maintain students attention.

He further recommended that all education stakeholders should implement progressively the study technology principles and strategy in schools to achieve quality education because, quality education is achievable if researchers focus more attention on what learners do not know.
