PROF BALA DECLARES CONFERENCE OPEN

The conference was hosted by the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (SAAT), Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State.

Declaring the conference open, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Bala, fsssn, commended the executive for choosing the University for their Conference Venue saying that it is very heart-warming, that the association chose FUT, Minna to be the first institution in Northern Nigeria to host the conference.

He explained that FUT, Minna has become the hub of conferences, as on the average, it host not less than six in a year and is ready to hosts more, believing that by hosting such conferences, the University is not only contributing to the dissemination of knowledge, but facilitating networking between the staff and the students and the wider scientific community.

“And for you to be a successful scientist today, one must be actively engaged in networking because it is only through networking that you would keep abreast with contemporary events, issues and global challenges facing us,” Prof. Bala stated.

The VC pointed out that seed is the foundation of production because without good seed, there would be no production, adding that good seed help in terms of quantity and quality of good produce.

“Majority of farmers in Nigeria use grains, rather than seed and everyday farmers continue to complain of low yield and low productivity,” he stressed.

The VC further disclosed that the University Senate has approved the establishment of the Department of Horticulture to give further emphasis to the production of horticultural crops.

Speaking at the event, the President, Association of Seed Scientist of Nigeria, Prof. Adebisi M. Ayodele, disclosed that seed is one of the factors affecting food sufficiency because seed serves as planting materials for crop regeneration and also a bridge between researchers and farmers.

Prof. Ayodele appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to strengthen seed development in Nigeria by increasing funding for the development of effective programmes, providing soft loans with single digit interest rate and providing funds for seed development in the universities and research institutes.

He urged the participants to attend all sessions with rapt attention and contribute to issues listed for deliberations.

In his goodwill message, the Director General, National Agricultural Seeds Council (NASC), Dr. Phillip Olusegun Ojo, represented by the Director, Technical Adviser, Mr. Okelola Folarin Sunday, said that they want FUT, Minna to become a leading seed developer and producer in the country.

He stressed the need for the institution to register as a seed centre in Nigeria for learning and training varieties of seed, adding that the Council was ready to collaborate and partner with the University.

In his short remark, the Dean, SAAT, Prof. Ayodele Odofin wished participants a successful deliberations and journey mercies back to their respective destinations.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman, Local Organizing Committee, Prof. Andrew Gana who appreciated the executive of the association for allowing University to host the conference said the University is one of the leading universities in terms of manpower development in science and technology.

He thanked the VC and his Management team for their support and contributions towards the successful hosting of the conference and prayed that the plenary and technical sessions of the conference would bring ideas that would move the seed industry forward.
