NAIS VISITS FUT MINNA

appreciation to the Management for opening its doors to them, adding that, as friends of FUT Minna they are quite aware of the enumerable strides of the University.

He said NAIS is a product of an Act of Parliament, Act No. 26 of 2007 as amended in 2015 and that the purpose of the visit is to look at the teaching and research resources and to also operate a triangle of nexus between the graduates, the institution that produces them and those who are going to be professionally responsible for those graduates all through their lives, so as to ensure that the products coming out are fit for the purpose.

He added that the Institute wants to also collaborate and work with the University as it is aware of what FUT, Minna stands for as well as the professional input and capabilities of the University.

Mr. Peter said the Institute is looking forward to a department of Animal Production that has a signature product which would produce young graduates that will eventually become entrepreneurs, as a lot of graduates do not know that there is a lot of money to be made and that is why they came to synergise with FUT Minna to help build a better tomorrow.

Responding, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Abdullahi Bala, fsssn, thanked the team for the visit while expressing excitement on the orientation and the line of thinking, noting that, very often when an accreditation team comes around, it is all about fault finding rather than trying to address the issues.

He said as Nigerians, we know the reality on ground, as the universities are not well funded and if the Institute can come in and work with the University Management to help the University speak out, trying to draw the attention of the powers that be, it will help everybody.

Prof. Bala said agriculture today is the best sector that is largely unexploited and it does not take much to make money or livelihood out of agriculture.
“Everybody has a dream but at the end of the day, even if you don’t get your dream the time you want, you should take anything that pays the bill and agriculture is one of the surest ways,” he said.

The VC said as a University, the objective is to let students be proud of agriculture, adding that the Management is happy to partner with the Institute.

At the end of the exercise, the team leader while briefing the VC on the exercise gave a summary of their findings, stating that the department has a concise, clear and appropriate academic content, adequate curriculum which also requires additional and professional content for industry relevance, functional safety equipment, adequate admission requirement, well publicised academic regulation, adequate standard of test and examinations, satisfactory student work with evidence of moderation and marking scheme, good quality practical work, good quality external examination system, adequate non-teaching staff.

He also mentioned some areas of concern which the University needs to address, urging the University to ensure deliberate student engagement in defending project of whatever pasture land the university wants to develop. He added that the Institute firmly recommends that all animal science, animal production, teaching and research farms must be sustainable with commercial appeal.

The VC thanked the team for telling the University the direction to go, he urged the department to be up and doing, adding that the University can get a lot from agriculture and investment should be targeted to yield results. He assured the team of his commitment to address the identified challenges.
