VC PRESENTS PATENT CERTIFICATE TO RESEARCHERS

Anthropomorphic Prosthetic Foot yesterday at the Senate Chamber, Main Campus.

Speaking during the event, Prof. Bala said the patent is granted by the Federal Government and that the research has a great relevance to the lingering foot-related medical challenges. “We are therefore inviting and are open to industry and government stakeholders as well as other partners to join us in the development and commercialization of this invention.”

He noted that the University would soon come up with policies that would create conducive environment and sufficient motivation for students creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship as well as staff benefit in the commercialization process through investment in technology start-up equities.

The University, according to him would continue to commit to research and intellectual property generation as an expression of its core institutional objectives to provide solutions to societal problems and contribute to development, to scale up global visibility and competitiveness and to generate income for research students, staff and the University.

Prof. Bala commended and congratulated the patent grantees Prof. Oladiran Abubakre, Dr. Saka Abdulkareem, Dr. Rasheed Muriana, Dr. James J. A. of the Federal Medical Centre, Bida and Dr. Rasaq Medupin of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida.

Earlier in his welcome address, Director, Directorate for Research, Innovation and Development (DRID)/Coordinator, Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office (IPTTO), Prof. Moses Olutoye said the product of the researchers has been patented setting the ball rolling for the next stage of development and commercialization.

Prof. Olutoye noted that the IPTTO of the University will take up the product and source for potential investors, since the product is targeted at some specific people and is useful for members of the society in the related medical conditions.

In his address, the lead inventor, Engr. Prof. Oladiran Abubakre who is also the Dean, School of Infrastructure Process Engineering and Technology, (SIPET) said the invention focuses on the production of prosthetic foot using readily available materials in Nigeria because Nigeria was blessed with abundant natural rubber resources.

He stated that the Nanotechnology Research Group of the Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology of the University produced the first Carbon Nanotube in Nigeria in 2014.

Prof. Abubakre pointed out that the invention will alleviate the challenges faced by the people that suffered from amputation resulting from road traffic accidents, diabetes, leprosy and insurgency.

On his part, the Director, Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Prof. Evans Egwin, said that they are proud to be associated with the innovation, because the research was handed and partly funded by the Centre.
