PROF OKUNADE TASKS FG ON ADEQUATE FUNDING OF EDUCATION

In the lecture titled: “Reading Nations Are Leading Nations: Whither Nigeria.” Prof. Okunade disclosed that Nigeria is no where to be found on the league of reading nations, this he attributed to its poor reading culture.

He called on government at all levels and philanthropists to massively fund education through the provision of well equipped libraries, educational facilities, book development centres, workshops to equip teachers at all levels and advocacy on reading should be included in school curriculum.

The don stated that government should place emphasis on primary education because, it is the foundation of formal education and where the foundation of life long reading culture is laid. However, there is the need for primary school teachers in particular to be well grounded in the methodology of teaching pupils how to read.

The lecturer who urged parents to provide reading materials for their wards, re-echoed that they have a major role to play in inculcating reading culture in their children.

According to him, with the joint efforts of the school, family, libraries, publishers, booksellers, mass media and government, the desired to improved reading habit in children and youth will be created which will enable Nigeria to engage in global competitiveness and join the league of leading nations.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abdullahi Bala, fsssn, congratulated the Lecturer for his beautiful presentation, adding that the message from the lecture was for all in their different ways to promote reading culture in their families and communities, which will go a long way in making them enlightened.
