PROF WUSHISHI TASKS STAKEHOLDERS IN PRIMARY EDUCATION

This call was made when he presented a paper titled; Managing Primary Education In An Emerging Economy, during the University Staff School’s Annual Speech and Price Giving Day Ceremony held on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at the school’s premises, Bosso Campus.

According to him, management of primary education in Nigeria started as far back as 1843 and it involves so many issues ranging from administration, supervision, teaching, curricular, policies, funding and infrastructure.

He pointed out that the Nigeria’s primary education has been financed through several services since inception to date. The instability in government commitment to the financing of primary education has been glaring over several decades and state governments spend few resources on primary education, preferring instead to concentrate on tertiary education he observed.

Explaining further, he said, the average spending on basic education was only 0.6 percent which covers only junior secondary schools, which suggests that states do not prioritize primary education as their expenditure responsibility.

Prof. Wushishi stated that, private sector plays an important role in providing education services at all levels. Private institutions do not receive official funding support from government but their main sources of finance for managing primary institutions are the fees they charge each pupil. Therefore, household’s contributions to education financing are very significant particularly at this period of economic hardship.
He urged parents to be passionate about contributing to their children’s education as a foundation for a better life.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the event, Mr. Amos Kolo, Registrar, FUT, Minna, represented by Alhaji Ibrahim Magana, Secretary, School of Life Sciences (SLS), said that the University Staff School is as old as the University itself, and that graduates of the school have made their mark in different endeavors, adding that the University is proud of the efforts of the School Management despite their present predicament.

The Head Teacher of the School, Mrs. Agnes Thomas in her report, said that the school is turning out another set of pupils who have completed their primary education and the teachers have done their best in imparting knowledge and moral values into them.

Mrs. Thomas said that the school is concerned with the total training of children and the disciplinary committee is saddled with the responsibility of handling some issues.

She disclosed that in 2017, 10 pupils were shortlisted to participate in the NNPC/SNEPCO Scholarship selection test and 3 pupils were successful to receive the NNPC scholarship award into secondary school.

She further appealed to parents to spend quality time with their children, provide them with learning materials and respond promptly when called upon.

Highlights of the event were goodwill messages from various invited guests, presentation of prizes to the outstanding pupils and presentation of awards to dignitaries and guests present at the event.
