Our History

The Federal University of Technology, Minna is a Federal Government owned University in Nigeria. It was established on 1st February, 1983.

FUTMINNA VC RECEIVES WASCAL CC & HH PHD STUDENTS

In line with the University’s quest to boost international students’ enrolment and global visibility, the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof. Abdullahi Bala, FSSSN on Monday, January 27, 2020 received in audience the inaugural Ph.D. students for the West Africa Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) Doctorate Research Programme (DRP) in Climate Change and Human Habitat at the Council Chamber, Main Campus.

Prof. Bala congratulated the newly admitted students on their well-deserved admission, adding that the University Management would do everything possible to make their stay in FUT, Minna and Nigeria memorable. The Vice-Chancellor urged the students to abide with the rules and regulations governing postgraduate programmes in the University while disclosing that FUT, Minna postgraduate programme was one of the most sought after in the country due to the fact that it is well structured with a well-defined time-frame.

He also commended the Director of the Centre, Prof. Appolonia Okhimamhe for competently and seamlessly handling the activities of the Centre.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of WASCAL Academic and Advisory Board, Engr. Prof. Salawu Sadiku said the purpose of the visit was to introduce the pioneer PhD students of the Centre to the Vice-Chancellor, adding that the visit would enable the students to meet the Vice-Chancellor whom the Federal Government has vested the authority to manage the University.

The Chairman who is also the Dean of the University’s Postgraduate programme disclosed that the WASCAL programme started with a Master’s degree programme but was later upgraded to a PhD status based on the successes recorded by the Centre.
Prof. Sadiku commended the Vice-Chancellor for giving approval for the reservation of hostel accommodation for the students on Campus, adding that the gesture would assist them to acclimatize with their new environment.

“The students will also be subjected to the normal orientation and matriculation programmes of the University for the students to be up to speed with the rules and regulations governing the postgraduate programme in FUT, Minna”, he disclosed. 

In her vote of thanks, the Director of WASCAL, Prof. Appollonia Okhimamhe expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and the University Management team for their well-documented support to the Centre. It will be recalled that the students were also received in Abuja on arrival by the Honourable Minister of Environment, Alh. Mohammed Mahmoud.
The newly admitted 11 students are from Niger, Senegal, Burkina-Faso, Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, Togo and Benin Republic. WASCAL is a capacity building and research programme funded by the German government.
